One Woman’s Ghost Story

One Woman’s Ghost Story: The First Night

The night before a recent appointment I was puttering from room to room picking up a bit to get ready for my client arriving the next day.  I’d just gone from putting a hairbrush back in the bathroom out to the kitchen with a cup when this scent started to drift into the kitchen growing more and more intense quite quickly.  I immediately recognized the smell as it is entirely distinct. (I thought that “White Water” seemed a harmless enough fragrance name when I bought it, but it smells nothing like rapids or anything found in nature for that matter).

“Eww!  Why are you spraying that stuff out here?” I shouted to my son, who I thought had gone into the bathroom as I’d come out.

“Umm, I’m out here.  I haven’t moved,” he replied from the living room.

“You’re joking right?  You didn’t just go into the bathroom after me?  You didn’t just spray that awful air freshener?  I can’t stand that stuff.”

“Nope…still sitting here doing my homework.”

“Well who is spraying it then?  Can’t you smell it?”  It was permeating the air in the kitchen completely by now.

“Not me, ” he paused  a second, “OH!  Now I can smell it out here too!”

It didn’t take long to rule out the obvious.  The bathroom didn’t smell like spray, even though that’s where the bottle is kept.  The cap was still on the bottle, which was still sitting in the basket.  No leaks.  With the cap on, the bottle didn’t even smell .

“Please, please stop spraying it!”

Then I saw her following behind me.  With her big blonde curly hair she was easily recognizable as the woman (in spirit) who was waiting for my next-days client.  “Just trying to help,” she chirped, all sweet smile and sparkling eyes.

“Okay, thanks for that.”  The whole while thinking to myself…seriously?  You couldn’t have at least used the “good” spray?  To me it made no sense.

The Next Day

The next day and my client arrived, so I shared the story with her.  “That sounds like something she’d do.”  We had a good laugh and got into covering all the messages my charming prankster had to share. One message had to do with wanting to let her family know that when she comes around to visit she would likely be noticed by the fragrance of roses.  “Roses were her favorite flower,” the client affirmed.

A day later it was still bugging me, why she would have chosen the terrible smelling spray.  Then I went in to take a shower and saw the bottle sitting there and it hit me so hard I had to laugh out loud.  In the bottom of this same clear spray bottle, is an artificial white rose.

Mystery solved.

More to the Story

This is not the end of my story.  Halloween showed up and I considered writing an article about the latest spirit or ghost “encounter” I’d had.  I didn’t have to go back more than a couple weeks for this one.  As I thought about what to write though, it started to make me realize how if such a situation happens to a person with no measured psychic or spiritual awareness the story turns into a spooky tale, suitable for Halloween blogging.  No mystery would be solved.  The “scary” would lie only in the not-knowing.  Lack of explanation building upon fear.  Develop your ultra-senses, however,.. see, hear, feel, know…and maybe even smell what others cannot…then immediately one woman’s ghost story becomes another woman’s love story.  One about a beautiful woman, who had to leave “here” too soon, and will do everything possible to let her loved ones know that she is still with them, content, healthy, and good-humoredly, crossed over

If I were pressed to choose between writing spooky stories vs. love stories, I’d choose the love stories, no question.  Much love to Julie, Nancy, and Kent…my friends, students, and clients (on both sides of the divide) who went Home this year.  I’m ever grateful for knowing you.  7NOV2011, One Woman’s Ghost Story
