Comb Symbolism and Possible Messages

The Symbolism

A comb, for hair, as opposed to that of the honey variety.  This is the meditation symbol for today, which includes comb symbolism meanings and possible messages for you.

Meanings

It is the symbol I got caught up in when I was practicing tarot with a friend over coffee the other day.  There wasn’t an actual comb in the imagery, but on two of five separate cards there was something unique about the artwork. In each I immediately saw a part of the picture as a comb (rather than what was plainly depicted).

As is the best advice if feeling stuck on a symbolic interpretation, she asked…”Well, what does a comb do?”  (You can apply that method of interpretation to about anything if you’re ever in a pinch; it works quite accurately).  Combs untangle. They filter out bits of debris. They put something back in order.  We use them on our heads, so that symbolically would ties into ideas and thoughts.  So what this comb-related part of the message came down to was about organizing my thoughts on a particular matter (related to the other symbolism in the image), and that doing this would provide some clarity.

Turn-of-Phrase

Also, in interpretation, idioms can be very useful to gain understanding of the symbolism.  In this instance consider: “going over it with a fine-tooth comb” or “to comb through something.” The meaning of those being to inspect or search for something carefully.

In some cases, a comb (or a hairbrush for that matter) may relate to messages about a person’s vanity. A surrounding “mood,” or other indications of narcissism, would serve to confirm this symbolism, too. Generally, this coming up in a personal dream would indicate subconsciously working through guilt over it. (Narcissist’s don’t tend to concern themselves with deeper meanings in life occurrences.)

Certainly a comb could appear as a symbol in a dream, a meditation, during tarot practice, or any other activity during the day. However a comb arrives as a sign, now you’ll know where to begin if you see one yourself.
